Lennon’s Response – A Novice’s Review

Lennon’s Response – A Novice’s Review

2. Read the first sample literature review (Review A):

A.    Have the reviewers clearly identified the topic of review? Have they indicated its delimitation? (For instance, is it limited to a certain type of individual or certain period of time? Does it deal only with certain aspects of the problem?)

-          The topics were clearly identified as the researcher discussed that the review was on cyber bullying amongst students from secondary, primary, and post-secondary levels.  The researcher thoroughly described and defined what the various terms of cyber bullying meant, “a skilled author of a report on an original empirical research will guide you through the material and make it comprehensible to you even if you do not understand all the jargon (Galvan, 2014, p. 3).

-          The researcher focuses on cyber bullying ranging from juveniles to young adult students, which is a certain type of individual in a specific period (time frame of students while in school).

B.     Have the reviewers written a cohesive essay that guides you through the literature from subtopic to subtopic? Explain.

-          This essay moves from explaining what the topic is about and defining terms and as Galvan (2014) mentioned previously, when writing for a purpose, there is a need to be direct and focused on interpreting the research question and incorporating other similar studies to help grasp a working knowledge of the topic.

-          This essay introduces the meaning of the term cyber bullying, the effects of cyber bullying, and finally how to respond and deal with cyber bullying, which deems a cohesive flow.

C.    Have the reviewers interpreted and critiqued the literature, or have the merely summarized it?

-          The reviewers did thoroughly summarize and interpret the findings incorporated from several different sources and additionally there was a critique of the information on cyber bullying as it was deemed as negative and in need of more reviews on the collegiate level (Galvan, 2014).

D.    Overall, do you think the reviewers make an important contribution to knowledge through their synthesis of the literature? Explain?

-          I do think that the reviewers make an important contribution to knowledge as it was shown in the beginning of the essay how this issue has resulted in the death of juveniles and young adults as a consequence of being the victim of this crime (Galvan, 2014).

-          There is also the importance of recognizing and addressing the need of growing crimes that develop from advancing technology and the need of new laws to be created, befitting of the crime to protect those who fall victim to this particular crime (cyber bullying) and others.

  1. Niki,

You did a nice job summarizing and showing the highlights of the review. I especially appreciate your attention to the importance of looking at crimes associated with technology. Technology is ever changing and almost impossible to stay ahead of the game. With all of the positives of technology, if it is used by the wrong people, it can have devastating effects. It is important for the criminal justice system to continually evaluate types of crimes being committed and how they can be addressed.

  2. Hi Keri,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, a lot of times the criminal justice system has a more reactive approach when it comes to technology and crimes that result as a consequences of the constant changes. In other words as in this case, when something is not understood as it is still very new to society, the system has to play catch up to developing a law that will contain this new found method (such as cyber-crimes - there are issues of jurisdiction limitations, is it a state law or federal law), and by the time all that is figured out a new crime is developing that will also require the attention of law makers.

    Take care,

    Niki
